HISTORY

For 75 years, Northwestern Visayan Colleges has been committed to its high standards by producing top-notch students and brilliant academic and years have passed, and it’s continuously innovating to uphold its guiding idea of providing access to quality education.

On April 7, 1948, NVC was established in the corner of the now Pastrana St., and 19 Martyrs St. Kalibo, Aklan. It was founded by prominent leaders of Aklan, where seven members became the Board of Trustees. The Chairman of the Board as well as the President at that time was the late Godofredo P. Ramos who was followed by Jose Salazar as president in the same year.

NVC started with 350 students in all levels occupying 1 building which is now used by the PS bank, the NVC external office, the Ancestral house and the hotel carmen. The Heritage House was the first building to be utilized, offering elementary and high school education. The first ROTC Unit Headquarter occupied the lower level of what is now the Carmen Hotel.

Keeping up with the needs of time, offering non-degree and short-term courses and high school night classes for self-supporting students. A few years later, with an exploding student population, the institution required a more spacious locale. It was then that the Education Building was erected. Several courses and short courses were also offered, including sanitary science, commerce, agriculture, arts and sciences.

In 1950, Atty. Tranquilino Rovero became president followed by Judge Rustico Salas Quimpo until 1967. In 1968, the Commerce Building was completed, this building was also named after the late president Allen Salas Quimpo before it was called DVS or Don Vicente Salas Building. Due to the government campaign for food production, NVC built another building and opened Agriculture course. A vacant land was provided for planting fruits and root crops. The now residential hall used to be a piggery. The leadership was reinstated to Judge Rustico Quimpo before it was transferred to Atty. Allen Salas Quimpo from 1980 to 1987. Atty. Allen was a son of the late Judge Rustico β€œTay Tico” Salas Quimpo and became the vice mayor and mayor of Kalibo, Aklan. At the start of the school year 1980 to 1981, Atty Allen Quimpo insinuated the opening of a two-year associate in Criminology. In 1988, Consolacion Abello Tafalla Ureta, Dean of Education, became the president of NVC. She served NVC for 33 years as teacher, dean, president, and member of the board until her passing in 1990. The Education Building was then named after her until it was converted into a commercial complex, and changed its name to SQ Plaza. She was replaced by Mrs. Ma. Erlinda Quimpo Fernandez- Wilson for presidency.

After 6 presidents passed in 1997, a new set of Board of Directors was inducted, where Carmen Quimpo became the Chairman of the Board, wife of the late Judge Rustico S. Quimpo and as years passed, new members filled in the seats and continued to serve NVC. Giving their utmost support to the President and in 1998, a 3-storey Rustico Salas Quimpo Memorial Building was built as an additional building for the education department.

NVC continued to expand and offer other courses. NVC also consorted with Feati University offering BS in Aircraft Maintenance Technology in 2009. And in 2012, the CSQ Gymnasium and the NVC Hotel and HRM Building was built as the institution’s contribution to Aklan’s boosting tourism.

NVC has demonstrated time and time again that the future of the students is always at the forefront of the institution, creating linkages in International educational connection with Kainan University (Taiwan), Sookmyung Women’s University in South Korea, and Fujian Normal University, Fujian, People’s Republic of China in the teaching of Korean and Chinese Mandarin Language in Aklan. This is in response to the growing job opportunities in other south-east Asian countries such as China and Korea.

Education of the highest caliber has been consistently provided by NVC over the years. Recent accomplishments include the Bachelor of Science in Criminology, the Bachelor of Elementary Education, the Bachelor of Secondary Education, as well as the Junior High School and Elementary Department achieving PACUCOA Level II accreditation. Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education graduates passed the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers, also known as the teacher’s board, with average ratings greater than the national cut-off score. The Professional Regulations Commission gave the criminology licensing exam, and the graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Criminology program aced it.

NVC has also shown great importance in cultivating talented youth. NVC would venture to different workshops to train its people to be globally competitive. NVC has been offering dance lessons for ballet and hip-hop, baking and food preparations, art workshop, guitar, keyboard, violin, voice lessons, Visual Graphics, Photography, Sports Clinic, Swimming, Violin, Martial Arts, and Mandarin Language as well as tutorial for academic subjects since 2001. The first ever in Aklan to do so. The institution has a long history of serving the greater good of society. At Barangay Bakhaw Norte, Kalibo, led by students from Computer Science, built the first-ever computer information system here in Aklan and we have supplied the Integrated School of Bakhaw Norte with reading materials.

NVC issued thousands of professions from different fields as living proof that NVC is the leading creator of successful people. Northwestern Visayan Colleges exemplifies the leaders’ dedication to adapting to the circumstances to give the populace better education and more chances. The legacy endures as we keep the flame burning for the succeeding millennia.
