Empowering Future Educators: Inside the College of Education Student Orientation for the Academic Year 2023-2024 of Northwestern Visayan Colleges

On Saturday, September 9, 2023, as the new academic year commenced, the College of Education Department, the home of NVCian educators, conducted a student orientation. The orientation aimed to provide essential information to both new and returning education students for the current school year.

The program started with an enthusiastic opening of the two amazing master of ceremonies, Mr. Gernie Ronn M. Tumbokon and Ms. Vianca D. Pamocol, with the collaborative effort of the College of Education Officers, and faculty and staff. The program proper started by a prayer led by Ms. Alicia Arcega, a 2nd year BSED major in Social Studies, alongside the singing of the Philippine national anthem and NVC hymn led by Ma’am Annete M. Morales, a member of faculty and staff of the College of Education.

The program’s opening segment commenced under the leadership of Sir Melfin Meren, a faculty and staff member of the College of Education at Northwestern Visayan Colleges. He warmly welcomed both new and returning students from various departments, including BSED, BEED, BPED, and BCAED.

As an esteemed educator, he shared valuable insights, especially addressing the first-year students, the newest members of the NVC family. He stressed the school’s mission and vision as guiding principles for future educators and the importance of 21st-century skills (Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity) for their professional success.

Following Sir Meren, Ma’am Ritchel B. Sasi introduced the “Backbone of the College of Education,” which is the Faculty and Staff. She provided an overview of their backgrounds and responsibilities, starting with Dr. Marianne Lao-Quimpo, the diligent and passionate Dean of the College of Education. She also highlighted the dedication of the staff members, most notably the instructors. She emphasized the crucial role of the faculty and staff in ensuring that the students’ educational journey was in capable hands, assuring them of a high-quality education.

The Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Marianne Lao-Quimpo, also introduced the Goals and Aspirations of the College of Education. She shared the purpose and significance of the Mission and Vision of the Department. She also shared various perspectives on becoming exemplary role models as future educators to the students. “You should act as catalysts and change agents wherever you are,” she emphasized. Indeed, this signifies that educators should consistently nurture qualities and principles that empower them to make a positive impact on their journey as teachers in the future.

Introducing the College of Education Branding, Academic Policies, and Student Discipline, Mr. Erwin Liberato Jr. took the lead. He presented crucial information aimed at helping students become familiar with the institution. He also emphasized the academic policies that students must adhere throughout the academic school year. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of adhering to various policies both within and outside the school premises to maintain a positive and safe environment for everyone.

Capping off the program, with the assistance of some CoEd students, they showcased the different uniforms students need to acquire and wear within the campus, including the PE uniform, regular uniform, and intern uniform.

Concluding the program, Ma’am Mary Ann Lopez, a dedicated faculty and staff member of the College of Education and the School’s Cultural Coordinator, delivered her heartfelt and meaningful closing remarks to the students of the College of Education.
